Oil Painting
Mondays 12-2 pm Starts February 5
continues monthly


Students walk through the entire process to begin and finish a painting, including planning the painting, selecting materials and generating the first sketches, blocking in from a value sketch, creating a grisalle; How to "sketch" directly onto canvas, creating the underpainting and building layers, and painting "rules"; Developing the basics of mixing and application, including washes, glazing, dry brush; Learning to capture the nuances of light and shadow: how to model shapes and forms that have the illusion of weight and volume, handling highlights; Demonstrations and hands-on exercises using still life set up and photo references. (materials list supplied at registration) The emphasis will be on starting and finishing paintings. $60/month

Watercolor - Two levels
Learn to capture the magical nuances of this exciting medium. Make watercolor your friend! Learn tips and tricks on how to begin a painting, from picking subject matter and stretching paper, to mastering washes and glazes, mixing colors both on the palette and on the paper, and finishing touches. (materials list supplied at registration) $60/month

Learn to paint in pastels. It is fun and easy and the results are luminous. Students will creating paintings using pastels: from getting the idea to planning the painting, selecting materials and generating the first sketches, blocking in from a value sketch; mixing pastels and application to develop the painting, learning (and breaking) painting "rules"; capturing the nuances of light in pastel; using pastel to lay in and develop believable, colorful shadows and to model shapes and form that have the illusion of weight and volume;. The emphasis will be on developing and creating paintings. (materials list supplied at registration) $60/month

Mastering Shadows
3 sessions $75 March or April dates TBA interested?

Take the mystery out of how and where to place shadows and how to use color to make them rich, luminous, and exciting, without using either black or white. Learn the anatomy of shadows and how to make them believable every time. Explore front lighting, backlighting and sidelighting, natural or artificial light; experiment with warm, cool, complementary and analogous colors; and develop a full range of darks suitable for every need. Oil, watercolor, and pastel welcomed.

Framing your Photographs Or How I learned to love my snap shots
1 day $50 February or March dates TBA interested?


A fun hands-on class on how to take your disappointing snap shots and make them into wonderful paintings. Sometimes you can use hopeless photographs as inspiration for two or three beautiful paintings. Bring enlargements (color photocopies are fine) of 2 or 3 photographs to work on and be prepared to have fun while you learn the secret to using photo references.

Plein Air Workshop

Would you like to try plein air painting but don't know where to start? This two part workshop will answer your questions and offer tips and tricks to make it fun and easy. Workshop is 1 evening and 1 morning on site $65
